Vastu-friendly house planning: practical tips

How to plan a home that follows Vastu principles while still working with your plot, light and budget.

By Golden Homes Constructions · · 5 min read

For many families in Bangalore, Vastu is an important part of planning a new home. The aim of this guide is practical: how to bring common Vastu preferences into your plan without losing light, ventilation or usable space. Families follow Vastu to different degrees, so treat these as starting points and discuss your own preferences with your architect.

Start with the plot

The direction the plot faces decides where the entrance and road access can be. East- and north-facing plots are traditionally popular, but well-planned homes are built on plots facing every direction. Rather than rejecting a good plot, ask your architect how to plan it well.

Room-by-room guidelines

Living roomNorth, east or north-east
KitchenSouth-east (north-west as an alternative)
Master bedroomSouth-west
Pooja roomNorth-east

Overhead tankSouth-west

Balancing Vastu with good design

  • Light and air come first. A room in the "right" zone that is dark and stuffy is not a good room.
  • Respect the bylaws. Setbacks and sanctioned plans cannot be changed for Vastu.
  • Plan wet areas together. Grouping toilets and the kitchen saves plumbing and reduces leak risk.
  • Think about rental floors. Each unit can be planned to Vastu preferences with its own entry.
  • Decide early. Vastu changes after the plan is sanctioned or the structure is built are costly.

Common questions families ask

What if my plot faces south or west? Good homes are built on such plots every day. The entrance position within the facade, room placement and openings can be planned to suit your preferences.

Can a staircase be in the middle of the house? Many Vastu guides advise against it. A side staircase also gives more regular rooms and an independent entry for rentals.

Frequently asked questions

Can every plot follow Vastu fully?

Not always. Plot shape, road direction and setbacks limit what is possible. A good architect balances Vastu preferences with light, ventilation and bylaws.

Which direction is best for the kitchen in Vastu?

The south-east corner is traditionally preferred for the kitchen, with the north-west as a common alternative.

Does Golden Homes design Vastu-compliant homes?

Yes. Our in-house architects can plan your home to your Vastu preferences as part of the design stage.
