Choosing construction materials: cement, steel, blocks and more

What the grades mean, how the options compare and what to check when materials arrive on site.

The materials inside your walls and slabs decide how long your home lasts. You do not need to become an engineer, but understanding the basics helps you read a quotation and ask the right questions.

Cement

Two types are common in house construction:

  • OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) 53 grade: gains strength quickly; often used for RCC work.
  • PPC (Portland Pozzolana Cement): gains strength more slowly but offers good durability and workability; widely used for masonry and plastering, and in RCC where specified.

Use cement from reputed brands such as UltraTech or ACC, check the manufacturing date on the bag, and store bags off the ground and under cover. Old or lumpy cement should not be used.

TMT steel

Thermo-mechanically treated (TMT) bars form the skeleton of your RCC frame. Fe 500 and Fe 500D are the usual grades for houses; the number is the minimum yield strength in N/mm², and "D" means higher ductility. Use branded steel from manufacturers such as JSW or Jindal, check the brand and grade marking on each bar, and avoid rusted or bent bars.

Concrete

RCC for houses is typically M20 or M25 grade, as specified by the structural engineer. Ready-mix concrete (RMC) gives consistent quality for slabs; site-mixed concrete must be carefully proportioned. Cube tests confirm strength, and curing for at least 7 to 14 days is essential.

Bricks and blocks for walls

MaterialStrengthsPoints to note
Red clay bricksStrong, good thermal comfort, familiar to workersQuality varies; more mortar and labour
Solid concrete blocksUniform size, fast to lay, strongHeavier; good curing needed
AAC blocksLight, good insulation, fast constructionNeed specific mortar and careful fixing

Sand

Manufactured sand (M-sand) is now standard in Bangalore. Use washed, properly graded M-sand for concrete and P-sand (plastering sand) for plaster. Too much dust or silt weakens concrete and causes plaster cracks.

Waterproofing and finishing materials

Use proven waterproofing systems from brands such as Dr. Fixit or FOSROC on terraces and wet areas. For electricals, plumbing and sanitaryware, branded products with manufacturer warranties save trouble later. Read our waterproofing guide.

What to check when materials arrive

  • Brand and grade match the agreed specification
  • Manufacturing date on cement bags
  • Grade markings on steel bars and the supplier's test certificate
  • Size and uniformity of bricks or blocks
  • Clean, well-graded sand without excess dust

Frequently asked questions

Which cement is best for house construction?

Branded OPC 53 grade or PPC cement from reputed manufacturers are both widely used. PPC is often preferred for plastering and masonry, while the structural engineer specifies cement type and concrete grade for RCC work.

Which steel grade is used for houses?

Fe 500 or Fe 500D TMT bars are commonly used for residential RCC work in India. The 'D' grade has higher ductility, which helps in seismic conditions.

Are concrete blocks better than red bricks?

Both work well. Solid concrete blocks and AAC blocks are faster to lay and more uniform; good red bricks give excellent strength and finish. The choice depends on cost, availability and design.
